Application Process

Applicants will not be able to register with the SGSSS portal and make an application without having secured the agreement of the relevant pathway representative(s) within their selected institution.  Institutions have different requirements on whether applicants need to have secured an offer of a place prior to seeking funding; consequently applicants need to ensure that they have undertaken the necessary steps as relevant to the institution in which they wish to pursue their studies’.
Consider the ESRC eligibility requirements. The ESRC requires that all funded students meet both the academic and residential criteria. You can find out more about the eligibility requirements here.
Contact your Pathway Representative. Contact your chosen university’s Pathway Representative and indicate that you are interested in putting forward an application to the SGSSS ESRC Studentship Competition. Your Pathway Representative will help to confirm your eligibility and advise you on your application.
Secure a nomination. To be considered for a scholarship, you must be nominated by your Pathway Representative. Each Pathway Representative nominates only a small number of ESRC applicants for the competition. Applications from students who have not been nominated will not be considered. Please note Partner universities set their own internal deadlines and procedures for nomination. You should contact your Pathway Representative as soon as possible for information concerning internal deadlines. Your Pathway Representative will inform you of your nomination by 9 February 2017.
Register on SGSSS Portal by 13 February 2017. Once nominated, your Pathway Representative will provide you with the link to register on the SGSSS Portal. Be ready to submit the following information: your and your supervisor's contact details; information regarding nationality and residency; the name of your institution and pathway you are applying to; contact details of 2 academic references (name, organisation, phone number, and email address).
Referees will be contacted separately by the SGSSS. We will upload both letters of reference to your application by the 17 February 2017.
Submit your application documents on the SGSSS Portal by 17 February 2017. Once you have registered and your nomination has been confirmed by the SGSSS, you will be able to upload your application documents to the portal. You should include research proposal form; curriculum vitae; degree transcripts, supporting statement from your proposed supervisor; and if applicable, your AQM application form.
SGSSS works together with its member Universities to rank all applicants and alloacte studentships to the best candidates. We will review your application in two stages and make a decision concerning allocation of the awards. In the first stage your application will be reviewed by your pathway and those applications selected to move forward to stage two will be reviewed by two external reviewers. The SGSSS will inform you after each stage whether your application has been successful. Studentships will be awarded by 12 May 2017.

Application Documents

Your ESRC application should include the following documents:

PLEASE DO NOT email these forms to SGSSS: we are only able to accept applications through the SGSSS portal, to which access will only be given once you have been nominated by your institution. Your first step should always be to contact your pathway representative.
