Scottish Graduate School of Social Science

Social Work

The Social Work pathway represents an important opportunity to support greater integration of advanced social work research training that will serve to sustain and develop future social work academics, researchers and policy makers. The pathway is provided through collaboration between Social Work at the Universities of Edinburgh and Stirling, and the Glasgow School of Social Work (GSSW).

Social Work doctoral programmes are well established in all the participating institutions and study is structured on a 1+3 basis through Masters provision in year 1 and on a +3 basis for applicants who have already achieved required levels of research training. Each University provides a robust research environment and all have strong governmental and professional practice links. The Criminal Justice Social Work Development Centre for Scotland is based at Edinburgh and Stirling hosts three Government funded national projects aimed at enhancing the evidence and practice base for child care and protection. Social work academics in the three institutions participate in several international research networks.
